Changing Lives: Chapter 3

Changing Lives: Chapter 3

The bus stop is very far from Maria’s house. She continues riding the bus for half an hour, gets on a train heading towards the city, and finally gets on another bus going north for another half hour. It is around 5 p.m. when she arrives at her apartment. The rain has stopped, and golden rays of sunlight are streaming through the clouds.

Maria groans as she walks up the flight of stairs to her second-floor apartment. She remembers how her joints hurt less when she was Emily and in her early forties.

The keys jingle as Maria opens the door. One is for her apartment, one is for her gray Honda Civic that she hasn’t driven since losing her better pair of glasses, and one is for the storage room that keeps all of Mateo’s things.

Mateo.

Maria’s heart lurcheswhen she opens the door and sees the kitchen table that Mateo made her. His coffee cup is placed at the seat across from hers. Maria has washed it every day since he died.

Maria sits down beside that coffee cup, as she did every afternoon, and begins talking aloud. She sighs.

“I told you that I would be switching lives with someone today, and I did. But it did not happen as I expected. I am still… me. But I’m also Emily. And I have no idea where in the world the rest of me is.”

Maria shook her head. “I still have all of my memories. I still love you. I still miss you to no end. But I’m Emily. I also have… I also had a job as a claim director, a mom who couldn’t care less about me, and a big, empty apartment.”

Maria looks down at the coffee cup.

“And now I have a small, empty apartment.”

Maria’s stomach growls. She slowly moves to the fridge, opens it, and finds it empty. She remembers that she goes to the market every afternoon to chat with the cashiers. This afternoon she forgot to go because… well… she was busy switching bodies.

The spring evening was chilly. Maria goes back inside to grab another sweater and heads out to the market. It is only a five-minute walk, but Maria is tired.

This is one of the reasons I wanted to switch bodies, Maria remembers. She was hoping to have a younger, more energetic body. Maria hopes that she was able to switch with such a person.

That was just a small reason, though. The real reason, the same as Emily, was that Maria was hoping for friends, for true companionship.

Has my life improved at all from when I was Emily? Maria thinks.

The automatic doors slide open, and the young woman at the cash register smiles and waves. Her name is Ayesha, and she is a quiet university student studying biology. She lives with a roommate and two cats, and she has recently been learning to play tennis. Maria knows her well.

Maria also knows that Ayesha probably talks to her out of sympathy, but regardless, she enjoys the conversations. Ayesha is a nice girl.

Emily had a good friend in university whose name was also Ayesha. Her personality was quite different, but Emily missed their pizza parties and their trips to a different museum every month. Maria smiles.

“Mrs. Moreira, you have such a lovely smile,” Ayesha says warmly to Maria. “How was your day today?”

How to begin?

“Well… I went exploring today,” Maria replied. “To a small town about an hour outside of the city. There was… a famous hot spring there.”

“Good for you, Mrs. Moreira,” Ayesha says, as she turns to help a customer.

Maria finishes shopping and heads home to make dinner.

She eats alone.

She lights a candle and takes a long bath alone.

She goes to sleep at 10:30 p.m.

Has anything changed from when she was Emily?

Changing Lives: Chapter 2

Changing Lives: Chapter 2

Emily takes a deep breath and stepped onto the bus. The driver, an elderly man, silently taps the coin slot and smiles. He knows why Emily is here.

Emily walks unsteadily to the back of the bus. She finds the back-right seat with the faded unicorn sticker and sits carefully, putting the backpack in her lap. It is filled with pictures of Emily’s co-workers, her laptop with all of her usernames and passwords taped to the screen, and her bankbook. According to the Internet, the person who gets Emily’s body next would have Emily’s memory and would already know who her co-workers are, what her passwords are, and where her bank is. Still, Emily thinks, it would be best to give them this information just in case.

Emily feels sorry for the next person to get her life. To tell the truth, Emily has nothing but her job. Her dad left when she was eight, and her mom moved across the country as soon as Emily graduated high school. Emily was so focused on climbing the ladder at her insurance company that she never worried about making friends. She had a cat named Ninja, but he passed away two years ago.

By the time Emily turned forty, she realized that she had no one in her life that was important to her. Everyone around her was married, had kids, or had fulfilling social lives. Too shy to go out and meet people, Emily tried talking to her co-workers more, but they did not seem interested in her. Then, she started taking classes to meet people–flower arranging, knitting, painting–but she was too shy to make plans outside of class.

Around this time, Emily started to wish she could start over in life.

The bus hisses and begins to move. Emily takes another deep breath. She whispers a silent prayer that she will change into a person who had a big family. She then prays again that the person who will get her body in the future needed money. She does not have much good in her life, but she has stability.

Emily thinks about her mom. She thought about writing a letter to her mom but decided not to. After all, she wasn’t dying. And the person who would get her body would still be her mom’s daughter and have all her memories. She would never know the difference.

Emily thinks about Jason, her boss. Thank goodness she will never have to see him again.

Emily thinks about her husband, Mateo. He passed away ten years ago, holding her hand in the hospital bed.

Her husband?

Emily looks down at her hands. They were soft and wrinkled. A gold wedding band is on her finger.

The change has happened.

My name is Maria, Emily remembers. She whispers the name to herself. It feels comfortable.

Emily looks out the window. Wind blows rain and flower petals hard against the window. Spring.

Suddenly, Emily–Maria–is crushed by a feeling of loneliness. Maria remembers her empty apartment, the sound of her clock ticking above the kitchen table.

She remembers the rushed conversations with her mailman, who after a few minutes breaks eye contact and says “Well…” before rushing off to the apartment complex across the street.

Maria looks at her face in the reflection of the window. Her eyes are emotionless, her gray hair straight and trimmed once a month by her stylist, Sharon. Maria has seen her face every day for the past seventy-eight years, but with Emily’s mind, it feels like the first time.

Heading home to an empty apartment.

What have I done? Maria thinks.

Changing Lives: Chapter 1

Changing Lives: Chapter 1

In a small village by a small lake next to a small, vine-covered mountain, there is an old bus stop. The bus stop is so small that most people driving by miss it. There is no bench or shelter–just a sign so rusty that only the BU and the ST are showing.

A bus stops there only three times a day on the way to a slightly less-small town. At 8:13 a.m. for the morning commuters, at 2:13 p.m., and at 6:13 p.m. About five people ride the 8:13 bus, looking tiredly out the window as they think about nothing in particular. The few night workers on the 6:13 bus look even more tired, having tried and failed to sleep through daylight hours. People rarely ride the 2:13 bus. The 2:13 stop was added when, fifty years ago, the local factory had three shifts and needed a bus for the 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. workers to go home. That factory closed twelve years ago, but the 2:13 bus still continues to come.

The local villagers rarely ride the 2:13 bus. Most of them have cars, anyway. But occasionally a tourist will get on a few bus stops earlier, having visited the not-so-famous hot spring waterfall that can be reached by a half-hour hike up the mountain. The look of disappointment shows clearly on these tourists’ tired faces when they come back from the waterfall that was really only a trickle. However, these tourists never get on at the rusty bus stop, nor do they get off there.

There is only one kind of person who gets on the bus at the rusty bus stop at exactly 2:13. These people look about as tired as the day and night workers, but they have another look in their eye: adventure.

They have heard the urban legend. In a small village by a small lake next to a small, vine-covered mountain, there is an old bus stop. If you get on that bus at 2:13 p.m. on a rainy day, you will change lives with the last person who rode the bus. Luckily, it rains in this village about 90 days a year.

There is a small anonymous blog that explains how things work.

1. Get on the bus at exactly 2:13 p.m. If the bus comes late or early, nothing will happen.
2. If it is not raining, nothing will happen. It needs to be completely rainy, too. If even a little bit of sunlight is showing, the switch will not work.
3. Sit in the seat in the far back of the bus on the driver’s side. The seat has a small stain in the corner, and a unicorn sticker is permanently stuck to the wall, right under the window.
4. You will change lives with the person who last rode the 2:13 bus on a rainy day. Only one switch can happen per day. If you and another person are both riding the 2:13 bus, only the person sitting in the back-right seat will switch.
5. The switch will happen between this bus stop and the next.
6. No one feels the switch happen, and if there is anyone else on the bus, they don’t notice either.
7. When you get off the bus, you are in the body of the person you switched with. You have all of your old memories, and you have all of their old memories.
8. After the switch, your old body is not yours anymore. The next person to ride the bus on a rainy day will get your old body and your old life.
9. You cannot switch back.

Most people are interested until they read the ninth rule: You cannot switch back. This is why fewer than ten people per year get on the 2:13 bus.

One of those people is Emily. On a rainy, slightly chilly September day, Emily arrives at the bus stop by taxi at exactly 2:05 p.m. She is wearing a wool sweater that she knit herself and is carrying a heavy backpack. Her hands grip the backpack straps tightly.

Emily’s knees shake as she hears the rumble of the bus coming around the corner of the mountain.

In the Woods: Chapter 6

You asked me to tell people that my Bigfoot stories are lies.

No one believes me.

Look at these comments on my YouTube channel:

john234: I don’t care what you say. Bigfoot is real.

flowerpower: If Bigfoot is fake, what killed my dog?

CatLover62: I can tell that you are lying. You touched your right ear a lot in the video. You never did that.

10arm22: BIGFOOT IS HERE. STAY AWAY FROM THE WOODS!!!

See? No one believes me.

That’s crazy. My Bigfoot videos were fake, but everyone believed me. Even if I tell my followers that you are fake, they don’t believe me. They only believe in you.

(deep voice) THEN MAYBE I NEED TO TALK TO YOUR FOLLOWERS.

What? Don’t you want them to think that you are fake? If you talk to my followers, they will know that you are real.

IT’S TIME TO STOP HIDING.

So, do you want me to take a video of you? If I do, will you let me go?

In the Woods: Chapter 5

Yo, yo, yo! This is Andrew. Welcome to my YouTube channel, “In the Woods.”

Guys, I need to tell you something.

I made it up. The stories about Bigfoot are lies.

The “blood” in my video was ketchup. I wore a costume. It was all fake.

I’m sorry for making you believe in Bigfoot.

The truth is: The data centers made me do it. The data centers wanted to make people scared. If people are scared of Bigfoot, they will not come in the woods. Then, the data companies can build more data centers in the woods.

The data centers are wrong. They are bad.

There is no Bigfoot. Don’t be scared of the woods.

OK. Are you happy now? Will you let me go? I’m hungry and cold.

Why did you make me lie? The data centers never talked to me.

What do you want?

In the Woods: Chapter 4

I have a Bigfoot costume. I bought it online for $35. It looks fake close to the camera, but it looks real far away.

When I make more money, I will buy a better costume.

Mo is still at home. She won’t come in the woods anymore. Most dogs love bones. Why was she scared of the bones in the barn?

I will make the video alone. There is a big rock. I can set my camera on it.

I will run behind the barn. I will make a lot of noise. I will take the chicken bones and throw them at the camera. My followers will all believe it.

Okay, time to make a new Bigfoot video. This costume is itchy!

(Stomping loudly and making Bigfoot sounds.) Arrrrrrrrrgh. Grrrrrrrrrr!

(Running and hiding behind the barn.) Arrrgh. Grrr!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Who are you?

Stop, stop!

In the Woods: Chapter 3

Yo, yo, yo! This is Andrew. Welcome to my YouTube channel, “In the Woods.”

Guys, I can’t believe this. I saw Bigfoot today. Look at this video. Bigfoot is far away, but you can see him here. He’s HUGE! He is walking behind the barn.

My video is only two seconds. But it’s clear: It is Bigfoot!

I went to the barn after I saw him. It was an old barn, and there were no animals. Bigfoot didn’t take anything, but he left this.

Don’t look if you don’t want to see blood.

Bigfoot left a small bone with fresh blood. Look. I think it is a squirrel bone, or maybe a groundhog bone. Does anyone know what animal’s bone this is? Why did Bigfoot leave it? I don’t know, but I’ll find out.

My video of Bigfoot is just a blurry video of a tree with vines. The bone is a chicken bone. And it’s not blood, it’s ketchup.

My videos are popular. I have 44,217 followers. Each video has hundreds of comments. Many people believe in Bigfoot.

I’m making money, too!

My dog Mo is not in this video. Yesterday, Mo and I were in the woods. I was looking for a new place to make videos. Mo heard a loud crash (probably squirrels fighting) and she ran. When she came back, her head was bleeding. I took her to the vet. The vet said that her head was cut. Maybe a squirrel hurt her.

Mo’s head stopped bleeding quickly. She is fine now, but I wanted her to rest.

Tomorrow, I will wear a Bigfoot costume. I will take videos of myself. This channel is getting better and better!

In the Woods: Chapter 2

Yo, yo, yo! This is Andrew. Welcome to my YouTube channel, “In the Woods.” I have exciting news. Look at this!

When I was walking in the woods this morning, my dog Mo started barking. She ran into some mud.

I ran after her. I looked down, and there is a HUGE footprint. This is not a person’s footprint. It must be Bigfoot!

Good dog, Mo.

Mo has a strong nose, and she knows what Bigfoot smells like now.

We will catch him!

Come back to my YouTube channel to see more videos soon.

I made the footprint with my hands. It’s not really Bigfoot.

Many people want to see Bigfoot.

My YouTube channel only has two videos, but it has more than 1,000 followers.

Many followers write comments. They tell me, “I heard a noise in my barn last week! There was a huge footprint, too. My chickens are missing.” Or: “When I was hiking yesterday, something was following me. Was it Bigfoot?”

They really believe in Bigfoot.

I told my Aunt Susan about my YouTube channel. She helped to take care of me after my parents died. She is like my mother. Aunt Susan asked me, “Are you really going to make money with YouTube? YouTube is a good hobby, but you are 25. You need a real job.”

Aunt Susan cares about me, but she does not understand me. I don’t want a normal job. I want to be outside. I want to be creative.

I hope I can make money with this channel.

In the Woods: Chapter 1

Yo, yo, yo! This is Andrew. Welcome to my YouTube channel, “In the Woods.”

On this YouTube channel, I walk in the woods with my dog Mo. We’re looking for one thing: Bigfoot.

What is Bigfoot? Bigfoot is a giant, hairy monster. He lives in the mountains out here.

Some people say that he is fake, but he is real. Last week, Mo and I were walking in the woods. Mo started barking. I turned around, and I saw it: Bigfoot. He was eight feet tall. His eyes were yellow. He growled. Then he ran away.

I will find him and take a video of him.

Keep watching “In the Woods” to see the real Bigfoot.

My name is Andrew. I don’t think Bigfoot is real.

People like stories. And I like to tell stories.

I don’t have a job. My friend makes money on YouTube. Maybe I can make money on YouTube, too.

I live in Arkansas. There is a lot of nature here. I can take good videos.

How can I make a fake Bigfoot for my videos?
